Neutrino Waltz

Tricky

A piquant and lively little waltz which celebrates the peculiarities of the neutrino … a sneaky little elementary particle which eluded physicists for year by changing its type or “flavor”.  So this waltz mirrors that elusive tactic by changing keys.  Often.

The left hand accompaniment consists of a few basic chords, but the melody is deceptively tricky, with alternating triplets and dotted eighth note figures.  Played at a brisk pace, the”drop lifts” are accomplished only by noticeably relaxing the hand as it is dropped onto the sixteenth note and lifting it on the dotted eighth.

What is a “Neutrino” waltz?

Good question. It’s a mixture of quantum physics and pure whimsy on my part.
According to the Standard Model in particle physics, a neutrino is an elementary particle which holds no electrical charge, travels at nearly the speed of light and passes through ordinary matter with virtually no interaction since it is almost, but not quite, massless. Relatively recently it was discovered that neutrinos change “flavors” or types … a process known as oscillation.  And that crucial discovery garnered the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics for Takaaki Kajita of Japan and Arthur B. Macdonald of Canada.

Here are the three known neutrino “flavors”

You have to love the physicists who dream up these names. Makes Quantum theory a lot more fun!
